Understanding and Supporting English Literacy Difficulties (Level 1)

Course

Understanding and Supporting English Literacy Difficulties (Level 1)

Duration

15 hours

Audience

Educators, teaching assistants, and programme staff working in charities, NGOs, and community-based learning settings supporting early and struggling readers.

Purpose

To equip educators with the knowledge, instructional routines, and practical tools to teach English literacy effectively, systematically, and inclusively using the Orton-Gillingham approach, informed by evidence from the Science of Reading and Science of Learning.

Format

This course is delivered on-site.

Course Description

This course introduces educators to dyslexia, a common learning difference affecting approximately 4–10% of the population. Participants will explore how children learn to read English, why some experience difficulties, and how sequential, structured and cumulative instruction can effectively support diverse learners, including those at risk of dyslexia.

Grounded in the Science of Reading and guided by the Orton-Gillingham principles, the course equips educators with the knowledge and skills to deliver key components of effective literacy instruction. Through guided practice and application, participants will learn to deliver explicit and multisensory literacy instruction that supports reading and spelling development of learners with varying profiles.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how dyslexia impacts reading using the Phonological Deficit Theory and the Simple View of Reading.
  2. Identify how the core principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach address the challenges faced by students.
  3. Deliver an explicit and structured literacy plan, specifically the components of phonological awareness, phonics and reading fluency.
  4. Build strong foundations in word recognition, using phonological awareness and phonics to support accurate decoding and spelling
  5. Develop sight word recognition to support reading fluency
  6. Use informal assessment data to diagnose learning gaps and design appropriate, targeted interventions for students with reading difficulties.

Assessments

The assessment consists of a 60-minute online quiz featuring scenario-based multiple-choice questions covering the topics from this course. Participants are required to complete the quiz to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Certificate

A Course Completion Certificate will be awarded to participants upon successful completion of the training, subject to a minimum of 70% attendance and a passing grade in the course assessments.

Course

Understanding and Supporting English Literacy Difficulties (Level 2)

Duration

15 hours

This intermediate literacy support course builds on foundational knowledge of supporting struggling readers, equipping educators with deeper expertise in phonological processing and text-level reading fluency. Participants will extend their understanding of how skilled reading develops, with a focus on advanced phonological concepts such as advanced syllable types and patterns, morphological awareness and suffix rules.

Educators will learn to deliver more sophisticated, structured lessons that move beyond word-level decoding to connected text. Emphasis will be placed on developing reading fluency – accuracy, rate, and prosody – through explicit, systematic instruction and repeated, supported reading practices.

The course will address common fluency challenges in struggling readers, including those with dyslexia, and provide practical strategies to build automaticity and expression.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to deliver targeted, data-informed instruction that strengthens both decoding and fluent reading at the text level.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of advanced phonograms, syllable types, spelling patterns and suffix rules to support accurate decoding and spelling.
  2. Use morphological awareness (e.g. base words, prefixes, suffixes) to support word recognition
  3. Make informed choices in the planning of an explicit and structured literacy plan, drawing from your understanding of the taught content knowledge and the Orton-Gillingham principles
  4. Deliver an explicit and structured literacy lesson that bridges word-level decoding to fluent reading in connected text.
  5. Implement evidence-based strategies to build reading fluency, including accuracy, rate, and prosody, through repeated and supported reading practices.

Course Description 课程简介

This 15-hour course provides an in-depth exploration of dyslexia and Chinese literacy learning difficulties, grounded in current research and evidence-based educational practice. Participants will examine the linguistic characteristics of the Chinese language, including its morphosyllabic writing system and the cognitive-linguistic skills required for successful literacy acquisition.

The course introduces key concepts and foundational knowledge, including the nature and manifestations of dyslexia in Chinese, common co-occurring learning difficulties, underlying cognitive-linguistic processes, principles of assessment and learner profiling, key teaching principles such as those derived from the Orton-Gillingham approaches, semantic radical knowledge, and essential instructional procedures. This theoretical grounding prepares participants for deeper application during synchronous sessions.

Participants will learn and practise strategies to support foundational literacy skills such as oracy, vocabulary development, sentence structure, and character recognition, as well as advanced literacy skills including reading comprehension and writing. The programme also guides participants in assessment and profiling, lesson planning and resource development, enabling them to design diagnostic, structured, multisensory, and responsive instruction tailored to diverse learner profiles.

By integrating theory and practice, the course supports participants in developing confidence and competence in delivering effective Chinese literacy instruction for learners with a wide range of needs.
